  • Parliamentary Evening 2004: A parliamentary evening on distributed generation was organised in the context of the First International Conference on the Integration of Renewable Energy Sources and Distributed Energy Resources, held in Brussels from 1st to 3rd of December 2004. The parliamentary evening took place on 30th November 2004 at the Bibliotheque Solvay, a former university library in the heart of the European district in Brussels. IRED had invited more than 600 key representatives from the European Parliament, the European Commission, the Member States as well as other European stakeholders. In the end, around 80 guests participated in the dinner debate. The key-note speech was delivered by John Scott, technical director at the British regulator OFGEM and driving force behind OFGEMs activities in the area of distributed generation. The speech triggered a lively and fruitful discussion which was moderated by the IRED coordinator Professor Schmid

  • EC Brochure "Towards Smart Power Networks-lessons learned from EU FP5 projects": 2005 the main focus of the IRED activities were directed at the development of the EC brochure and the dissemination of findings and results. The main lessons learned from EU FP5 projects in this area can be grouped as follows: The change in emphasis from "connecting" to "integrating" DER into the overall system operation – and its development – is critical. The electricity networks of the future will be based to a large extent on new power electronics and ICT applications, some of which have already been in use in other sectors of industry for decades. Fully integrated DER will have the potential of delivering a number of benefits for Europe, such as reduced central generation capacity; enhanced transmission and distribution network capacity; improved system security; reduced overall costs and CO2 emissions; and shaping Europe‚Äôs competitiveness worldwide. Reliability, safety and quality of power are the main issues linked to the large-scale deployment of DER. Their effect on European transmission networks, cannot be neglected and must be addressed with a comprehensive system approach.

  • Initiative and support to set up the European Technology Platform "Smart Grids": The Commission encouraged the research Cluster IRED to be the embryo of such a Platform and initiate a wide consultation with stake-holders to find possible common visions for Advanced Power Networks and to recommend win-win solutions which would reinforce public and private investments on research in this area. Furthermore activities to set up the ETP "Smart Grids" were supported by some IRED cluster members in the function of work package leaders and the vice chairman of the advisory council. Several meetings and telephone conferences were held in this context in 2006. The main outcomes were the vision paper and the strategic research agenda (SRA) of the Platform.

  • 7th FP content approaches and workshop: To give an coordinated input in the FP7 Activity "Smart Energy Networks" several participants or representatives of the IRED-Cluster attended the consulting meeting of IRED in Kassel in May 2006 and later on the workshop organised by the European Commission at the 20th June 2006 in Brussels..
