 WP2: ICT/IST Relevant for DER
Leader: Prof. Dr. Hans Akkermans, EnerSearch AB, Sweden

The key objective of the IRED project's WP2: ICT relevant for DER, has been to significantly increase the level of exchange and awareness regarding the strategic relevance of ICT for DER in Europe. This has been achieved by a range of externally oriented activities over the period 2004-2007:

  • The development of the electronic power market game ELEKTRA, demonstrating the ideas underlying ICT use in market-based power trading of large scale DER, and played a.o. at a plenary session with over 120 participants in the 1st Int. Conf. on Integration of RES and DER, Brussels, 3 December 2004.
  • Extensive contributions to popular and accessible forms of dissemination to professionals and the wider public, including several full-colour brochures, flyers and posters. A particularly significant contribution from IRED was to the EC brochure Towards Smart Power Networks - Lessons Learned from European Research FP5 Projects, specifically Chapter 3: ICT Builds Smart Electricity Networks. The brochure appeared end of 2005, and is also available from the EC DG Research website and the SmartGrids TP website.
  • Liaison activities with many running and new projects in the area (e.g. EU-DEEP, INTEGRAL), with public presentations of issues cross-cutting ICT and DER, in over 25 invited talks in many different countries.
